86th Street Preservation Project

This project provides for the repair and resurfacing of 86th Street from Aurora Avenue to the North Corporate Limits.  Work will include patching to restore the base pavement followed by a total asphalt overlay to provide a smooth driving surface.  Repairs will also be made to sidewalk ramps to bring them into ADA compliance.  There will be periods of noise and lane closures.

The City of Urbandale appreciates your cooperation and patience as we improve the condition and driving surface of this major route.

Project Status

Update Friday, June 15th: At the I-80/35 interstate bridge, work is proceeding on replacing the bridge approach pavement in the inside lanes.  The inside lanes are closed for additional patching between Meredith Drive and Northpark Drive.

For safety and proper traffic operations, the left turn lane is closed on both the eastbound and westbound I-80/35 off ramps during the bridge approach replacements.

Beginning Sunday, June 17, sections of 86th Street will be closed at night.  86th Street will be reopened each morning by 6:00 AM.  Detours will be posted.  Local traffic will be maintained at Meredith Drive, Plum Drive, and Northpark Drive when possible.  These closures are to complete milling and partial depth patching in anticipation of the final surface overlay.

This work will cause delays on 86th Street and possibly on I-80/35 due to ramp queues. Please remember to slow down and drive safely.

Access and Work Zones

Notice to Residents and Businesses

Access will be provided for residences and businesses along the road during road closures.  Every effort will be made to minimize the impact, but there will be some inconvenience.  The goal is to work both safely and quickly.  Please be patient and work with the contractors.

As always, please use caution when driving through a construction zone.  Tack oil will be placed just before the asphalt paving.  Local residents should avoid driving on the tack oil.  If crossing the tack oil is unavoidable for access, please drive slowly.
