4th Annual B.Y.O.B. Race

This event grows every year! Bring your own boat, (made out of cardboard and duct tape only – no markers or paint to be used) with paddles (they do not have to be homemade) to the pool. Great project for clubs, boy and girl scouts, families, etc. The race will be one lap (down and back- 60 yards). Races will go in heats, beginning with the youngest age group. Categories are in age groups for both individuals and groups (2 or more in the boat):

Egg Dive

Join us for the 8th Annual Egg Dive! This has become very popular in Urbandale and is growing each year, so come early. Children will be divided in age groups to dive for colored eggs in the pool. Each egg will be turned in for a prize! Diving will begin with the youngest age group and continue until all age groups have participated.

Scuba Class

This 7 week course will teach you proper care of equipment, mask and snorkel clearing, assembling of scuba equipment, regulator clearing, octopus breathing, basic diver rescue and others. Upon completion of this course there is an open water diving experience required to become fully certified. This is scheduled after the course is completed or a referral letter can be issued. After completing all classes and the open water requirements, you will receive a Scuba Educators International (SEI) certification. Minimum age: 10 years. Optional text book $30 (plus tax) is available at Matt Leyden’s Dive Shop. Mask, fin, and snorkel are required for the class. Certified Instructors will be provided by Leyden’s Dive Shop

Water Safety Instructor Class

This class is an American Red Cross course designed to teach you how to teach swimming lessons, and give you hands-on experience to better prepare you for a successful teaching experience. Pre-requisites: Be at least 16 years of age, have the ability to maintain a position on your back for 1 minute, tread water for 1 minute, and demonstrate the following skills: 25 yards to a level 4 ability front crawl, back crawl, breaststroke, elementary backstroke, sidestroke, and 15 yards butterfly. There is an approximately 10 hour online section to this class that will need to be completed PRIOR to class with completion certification presented to the instructor at the beginning of the first day to continue in the class. The information for the online section will be sent via email to the participant 1 week prior to the first day of class. No refund will be given for failure to complete this prior to class. Certification of this course will allow you to teach swimming lessons as an employee of the Urbandale Pool. Price includes all books and materials for the class. Minimum 4, Maximum 10.

Lifeguard Class

This class is an American Red Cross course which upon completion will certify you for lifeguarding, lifeguarding first aid and professional CPR. These are all the certifications needed to become a lifeguard. Pre-requisites: Must be 15 years of age by the end of the course, swim 300 yards continuously (using front crawl, breaststroke or combination of both; goggles can be worn), tread water using only legs for 2 minutes, and start in the water and swim 20-yards (no goggles allowed) surface dive 10 Feet, retrieve a 10-pound brick, return to the surface and swim back 20 yards on back while both hands are on the object, and exit the pool without using a ladder within 1 minute, 40 seconds. There is 7.5 hours of online training that will need to be completed PRIOR to the start of this class. A copy of the completion certification will need to be presented at the beginning of the first day of class to continue in the class. Information for the online section will be printed on your receipt in the notes section. No reminder or refund will be given for failure to complete this prior to class. Individuals will need to successfully pass online section, written exams, and in-person skills to be certified. Minimum 4, Maximum 10.

Lifeguard Instructor Class

This is an American Red Cross class to be able to instruct lifeguard classes for the American Red Cross. Pre-requisites for the class are: at least 17 years of age and have current American Red Cross lifeguard certification. After the registration deadline, information will be emailed to you to do the following prior to class; successfully complete an online orientation to the Red Cross, lifeguarding instructor pre-course exam, pre-course session and orientation to lifeguarding course. Low Impact Senior Water Exercise Class

This class is designed to increase range of motion, strength, balance and flexibility without discomfort from weight and gravity on joints and muscles. This class is one day per week and in meant for beginners and those individuals wanting to pair their exercise program with another class. This is not a cardio class and adjustments will be made for individuals to meet their personal fitness goals. This class is conducted under the guidance of a certified Aquatic Exercise Association Arthritis Foundation Program Leader. Participants with annual passes receive a 20% discount. Deep Water Toning

This unique form of exercise takes place in the deep water and is designed for strength and endurance. The exercises performed are set to music to maintain speed and endurance to increase your heart rate. Water belts are worn to assist you in maintaining the proper position while exercising in deep water, benefiting from the full effects of resistance on the whole body without the pressure of the weight of your body and gravity. This class is designed to provide you with an excellent cardio-respiratory workout, great weight loss/fat burning (burning up to 550 calories per hour), strength and endurance building workout, and a fun way to exercise. The class has a higher calorie burning effect due to the constant resistance of the water. Participants with annual passes receive a 20% discount. Minimum 5; maximum 20.

Shallow Water Aerobics

This is a challenging workout in the water approximately chest deep. The routine will offer a variety of different techniques such as weight resistance, drag equipment, cardio and strength endurance. The level of calorie burning, weight loss/fat burning, strength endurance and cardio-respiratory workout will vary depending on level of exercise and technique; burning up to 500 calories per hour. Participants with annual passes receive a 20% discount. Minimum 5; maximum 25.

We’ve taken the basic shallow water aerobics moves and amped up the intensity. This non-stop, dynamic workout uses a variety of weight resistance and drag equipment to build muscle and increase stamina. • While in a vertical position, rotate 1 full turn in deep water.

• Flutter, scissor, dolphin and breaststroke kicks on front / side minimum 15 yards successfully and independently

• Front crawl with rotary breathing and elementary backstroke minimum of 15 yards successfully and independently.
