Urbandale has adopted the International Property Maintenance Code 2012 Edition,
with amendments that are incorporated in Urbandale Ordinance No. 2015-05 Chapter 151
Single-Family or Duplex Certificates are valid for Two years.
To apply for a Single-Family or Duplex:
1.    Fill out the Housing Inspection Application (PDF)
2.    Submit the application and pay the fee
3.    Schedule an inspection by calling 515-278-3930  
4.    Pre Inspection Checklist- Single Family/ Duplex Checklist (PDF)
All Single-Family and Duplex inspections are conducted by City Staff.

Multi-Family Certificates are valid for One year.
At the first of the year, complexes will receive written notice of the upcoming inspections, at which time it will be determined if the complex requires a City inspection or Self-Inspection. 

City Inspections- Buildings are required to 
1. Fill out the Housing Inspection Application (PDF)
2. Submit the application and fee prior to stated due date
3. Schedule an inspection by calling 515-278-3930
4. Inspection will be conducted by City Staff
5. Inspection should be scheduled and corrections completed by June 30th

Self- Inspections- Buildings are required to:
1. Fill out the Housing Self- Inspection Application (PDF) 
2. Submit the application prior to stated due date- no fees for self-inspections
3. Perform the required inspections and returned the complete form Annual Multi-Family Self Inspection (PDF)
4.Inspections should be conducted by Complex Maintenance or Management
5. Inspections should be complete by June 30th

Some common items that typically need to be addressed:
  • Ground Fault Circuit Interrupt (GFCI) protected receptacles are required in all bathrooms.
  • Corrugated Stainless Steel Tubing (CSST) present in the dwelling or building must be properly bonded.
  • Smoke Detectors are required in each bedroom, in the hall outside each bedroom and one on each level. These detectors may be battery operated and the State Fire Marshall requires any new smoke detector installed or replaced after 4/1/2010 must be a dual-sensor detector.

    If renovation work is being done on any housing built before 1978, the Iowa Department of Public Health Lead Bureau should be contacted at 1-800-972-2026.

    The Urbandale Fire Code Ordinance requires multi-family buildings with automatic fire alarm systems to be monitored by an approved UL listed remote station in accordance with NFPA 72, to provide for the immediate and automatic notification of the Fire Department.
